Reel Talk: Now You See Me Too

I have always been captivated by magic. If the movies involve magic, I am there. 2013’s “Now You See Me” is one of my most favorite movies in that year. It was light-hearted, plot-thick and entertainment-laden, full of suspense and mystery.

Php210 for a movie ticket-- worth it?

So when the sequel came out, I didn’t let the weekend pass by without me watching it. It was a longer movie compared to the first—the Four Horsemen are back after a year of seclusion. They always give a Robin Hood thrill, standing up for what is right and good against the evil criminals who bleed the rest of the world dry. They do this with their awesome magic tricks.

Lula and Jack (www.lacrossetribune.com)

I missed the sexy and playful Henley Reeves (Isla Fisher) in this movie. Newcomer Lula (Lizzy Caplan), seems to not have a good grounding of her character—she was a fan, then she joined the Horsemen, I don’t know how she came into fruition actually. I just felt the character was feeling too close for comfort in the movie. The kiss between her and Jack Wilder (Dave Franco) indicated a romance that was too juvenile to be expected, with just a few flirty exchange of words in one scene.

One of the most exciting scenes is the intellectual card/chip exchange between the Horsemen amidst the strictest and most secure of laboratories. It was a great execution of teamwork within a very formidable plan. Two thumbs up for this scene!

To act as McKinney is a feat in itself but to additionally act as McKinney’s twin show the acting power of Woody Harrelson. He brings with him some wit, charm, and funny exchanges, one of which was the banter of having some old man pubes as his twin’s hair.

I got a new crush in the form of J. Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg) whose rain control performance makes me wish I was there right in front of him when he performed his magic trick.

The plot actually revolves around forgiveness, letting go of the past, learning from the past, and overcoming your fears and reservations. While I was half-wishing Dylan’s (Mark Ruffalo) dad is still alive, I guess the movie was wise enough to not engage the audience in an obvious twist. Thaddeus Bradley (Morgan Freeman) as Dylan’s dad’s partner, however, was a twist that was not too obvious but not too surprising as well.

Oh, and before I forget about Daniel Radcliffe being a villain, I couldn’t help but associate him to Harry Potter still and wish that he could just say “Accio wand” and perform spells in front of the Horsemen and he would just chuckle and say, “Muggles”. Oh well, Daniel is better left at Hogwarts and in the magical world than be a half-wit crybaby bastard who has no business acting like a villain.

So anyway, I wouldn’t reveal their grand finale of a magic trick but of course, in all good movies, the Horsemen win, even introducing Dylan as their leader (never mind him deceiving the FBI). And while the culprits were shown to the public, the Horsemen explained via lengthy dialogues and flashbacks how they did what they did. Although it did gave me a “aaahh” moments, I couldn’t help but think what the culprits were doing while they did this. If it were real life, it would have been pretty awkward just standing there and listening to how they were “fooled”.

Summary:

Verdict—Level 2, overall. Level 4 just for Jesse Eisenberg. haha
